Poland Meeting 2011

On Wednesday 16 June 10 pm, i left home to pick up Johan in Belgium. I arrived at his place at midnight, did a little packing and headed for Poland at 1 am. At 5 am we saw the Wolfsburg signs and we decided to take a look at the volkswagen factory:

Then we left to do some sightseeing in Berlin, and get some breakfast.

Brandenburger Tor

Checkpoint Charlie

Berlin Wall

Bahnhof Zoo (from Christiane F)

After a quick breakfast at the McDonalds at Bahnhof Zoo we continued our journey, but at the moment we crossed the Poland border, the traffic was stuck. So the last part of our onway was very time-consuming:

Finally we arrived at our destination: Szbaszyn, Poland at 3pm!:

And put our stuff in the bungalow:

Then it was time to take some pictures at the lake at the campingsite:

Later that day our fellow club-members arrived:

That evening we partied with beer and sausages! The next day we had to get out of bed early because we were supposed to leave at 9 am with all the people of the meeting, to go see some WOII bunkers. This is where we lined-up for the colonne to the bunker:

When we were halfway there they decided to take a pause. Yep that's me sitting :D:

And maybe if you shaked the tree good enough some women would fall out:

We were not the only ones who took some pictures:

At the parkingplace of the bunker:

This was our guide in the bunkers:

Pictures of the bunker:

The bunkers are connected with kilometres of tunnels:

There was also a little museum with stuff they found in the bunkers:

Then there was some time to take some pictures of my car, and have a drink:

On our way to the boggest jezus statue in the world app. 35m:

But when we got there it didn't seem that big:

Some pictures of the cars:

Groupfoto:

And back at the campingsite we decided to take another shoot at the look, now during twilight:

Later that evening it was sausage, beer and wodka time!

The next morning we went in a collone to a local firebrigademuseum

That afternoon we went to the main square of another place, to vote for the best scirocco:

We also had the time to look around in that village:

Later that day they organised a little scirocco-towing-competition:

Then it was time for the awardshow:

This is a movie made by one of the Polish guys:

The next day it was already time for most people to go home. Johan and i had plans to visit krakow that day, so we joined the group which headed for krakow. That evening we arrived in krakow and had some dinner:

We decided to go to bed early, because we had a full program the next day (monday), as we want to go to auschwitz and then go home.

Auswitch:

This was the first death-camp the nazi's build on that place. Later they build another one called birkenau 2 km from the first camp.

These are the barracks people slept in:

Prisoners on appèl:

This map shows why the nazi's build the camp on that spot. It was easy to acces from all across europe, and easy to hide:

Arrival of some prisoners:

The figures of deported jews to auschwitz:

Arrival of jews from Hungary:

Selection of jews, who was dirrected directly to the gaschambers, or who was able to work:

A map of auschwitz and birkenau:

Model of the crematorium in Birkenau:

Model of the gaschamber in Birkenau:

Some of the personal belongings:

Beds in auschwitz:

Pictures of the prisoners. Of most prisoners there are ni pictures because they were send directly to the gaschambers. On this pictures you can see the day of arrival and day of death. These people were not murdered in the gaschambers, but they died from starvation and hard work. Most people died in the winter:

Toilets:

Watchtower:

Wall where people were giving a headshot:

These poles they used to hang people by there hands. The hands were tied behind their backs, so when they hang there, there shoulders were often dislocated:

Roof of the gaschamber:

The gallows where the campdirector was hung, after the war:

This is inside the gaschamber. The hole in the roof was used to drop the pallets. The pallets became gas when the temperature was above 26 degrees celcius.

These are the ovens used to burn the bodies:

Electrical fence:

The camp in Birkenau:

Main gate:

Toilets:

Beds, on one level there were 10 people sleeping. In one barrack there was room for 800 people!

The wagon wich was used to transport the prisoners to the camp:

This is what is left of the gaschambers in birkenau. Just before the camp was liberated by the soviets, the nazi's bombed it to destroy the evidence:

Dutch remebering-plaque

And at the end of the tour we made some pictures of my car. It feels kinda strange to take these pictures in such a place, but we did it anyway:

The it was time to go home:

The END

Not all pictures we made ourselves, some pictures are taken from other people
